I would still look into NGINX, I was able to take a 9 server cluster and take a single server virtualize it (VPS) into a few different servers and create a 2 web server cluster using NGINX as my load balancer and web server and it has been more stable than the 9 server apache cluster.
You guys should really dump Apache and go with NGINX+PHP-FPM+memcached it will save you lots of resources on the server, it's a helluva a lot faster and doesn't suffer the C10k problem (is this what happened from the Reddiit traffic?)

Considering the amount of bandwidth Valve leases/uses from their providers. These updates hardly cost them anything. Even when they have the $2 deals for TF2 the cost of delivering the download only costs them a few cents.
