HL2 is way beyond any of the games you've mentioned, at least in single player. yes you have to experience the game. And the HL2 deathmatch and counter strike source will keep you busy after you beat the single player game. it's epic, and you can't miss it. you're very late. go get it now!

Well I paid for Gold so I'll definitely be downloading it. Honestly I'm pretty excited just because it's something new (never played any of the older DoD games). I'm just wondering if I'm going to be able to put BF2 down long enough to get into this.

I'm not sure that the -console command is what gets rid of the background. I think it's -developer 1. In the "launch options" of half life 2 (right click on half life 2 in games list and go to properties) type in -developer 1 It skips those bgs makes the loading hell of a lot faster.
