ive got a logitech 5.1 surround sound speak unit. works fine on all other games but in half life 2 only the front speaker works. when ever i look away from someone there voice drops off. in essence i can only hear wahts infront of me in the game.
any recommendations?

Are you sure the audio settings in the game are correct?

you sure you have all of the audio plugs plugged into your computer because there is 3 plugs which are needed to have 5.1 sound.

After checking your Audio plugs and game settings, if nothing changes, go into control panel, sounds and Audio devices, volume tab, Speakers settings, advanced and select the appropriate speakers in the drop-down.
Also set speakers accordingly at your SB control panel EAX/Mixer control panel too.

Good Luck.

Half Life 2 uses it's own sound system, be sure to set it right in HL2. Also I noticed AC97 onboard sound dosn't always seem to work with HL2 properly.

I'm having the same problem; however, I'm completely certain that the sound settings are right, as surround sound works on all other games, with my iTunes, and all. I tried every speaker setting in Half Life, also. The 5.1 and 7.1 only let me hear what's straight ahead. The 2 and 4 speaker settings don't produce any sound at all.

Any suggestions?

try typeing in "snd_digitalsurround 1" into the console and see if that helps.

Hoorah! It's working!

Nayslayer was right--putting in snd_digital_surround 1 fixed it no problem.

Thanks folks!
