I was just reading through the Half-Life 2 storyline, and came across this detail from the conclusion of Opposing Force (during G-Man's final speech on the Osprey) that didn't seem that important, until now...

The G-Man (who had been watching him throughout the game) stands in front of Adrian and explains to him that his ability to "adapt and survive against all odds" rather reminds him of himself.

In light of what we're seeing in the Portal videos, perhaps this gives creedence to the possibility that the G-Man is the player character...

Well, Opposing force has many plot inconsitansies, and the G-Man's speech at the end is one of these. While it must be accepted as part of the HL universe, I woulnd't advise exploring to deeply into the events of Opposing Force.

Additionally...

Could Portal be the game that explains how the G-Man can transport from place to place on a whim? Perhaps he steals the portal gun after his training?

We may not see the main character of Portal again. Remember the new trailer? "Once the testing is over, you will be...minced"
Course, as you say, he might escape.

No thanks. Playing as the g-man would totally destroy everything about him.

We know by now that all the expansions are official parts of the HL storyline, and I personally think it's a great idea, rather than blow-off all the expansions, to try an incorporate them into the storyline...seems I'm pretty much alone in this.

And what does this have to do with Episode Two.

BTW that ain't the G-man, he does'nt have a baldspot on his head...

I think escape is a pretty good possibility...he has a PORTAL GUN for pete's sake.

I think the Shepherd character for Portal theory is more likely than the G-Man.

I didn't say they weren't. I'm just saying they (or at least, Opposing Force) have many inconsitansies, and you should not dig to deeply into them.

KaMaKaZi-BLiTz, this is a Portal thread, too, right?

Why yes it is, but the theory about G-man being the main character is just plain stupid. The G-man never had balding, Also how the F**k can the G-man fit that big portal gun in his small little brief case...*Sighs*

I was thinking Shephard at first, too (I never thought for once it was Kleiner, for numerous reasons), but now I'm not so sure. I love the idea that G-Man will somehow use him as his new pawn (although I can't imagine how that will work), but I think the G-Man idea is viable, too.

And as far as the "bald patch" argument goes, I don't buy it. It's just a texture--I haven't seen clear picture of it, nor would it be difficult to change at the last minute even if it was there.

Really? That gun wouldn't fit in his suitcase? Thanks for the spacial reasoning lesson.

Assuming this takes place in the past (as most have indicated with the "young" Kleiner and G-Man theories), perhaps the technology has evolved to something smaller--(iPod to iPod Nano, anyone?).

Its a sodding new character for god sake, stop bringing shepard into the portal theory. It CERTAINLY will not be thew G-Man, that would just be crazy!

I doubt the story of Portal is so integrated into HL2. Valve has continuiously stated that it is an experimental game (one of which probably wasn't even thought up until a year ago when they saw the college kid's Nabucular Drop project).

Its doubtful that they had planned such a storyline that involved this experimental game Portal way back years ago when OP4 came out.

I agree that they couldn't have thought all this Portal stuff up way back when Opposing Force was created, but who's to say that can't retrofit what happened in the past to what's happening now in HL? Probably not the best example to use, but look at the Star Wars prequels...a lot of it was trying to fill in the plot holes that the first three films introduced.

And to respond to your first point about Portal being an experimental game not so integrated into the HL2 universe...then why even say it takes place in the HL universe? Why throw that out there unless it has a least SOME bearing on HL?

Its just a tech demo, dude. like Lost Coast was to test out HDR. Well Portal is an experiment to see how people like it, before it can be put into Hl2.

They want to integrate it into the HL2 storyline (or even HL3), but they aren't sure about it yet... so they just say its set within the HL-universe to play it safe.

Portal is also being used to introduce to people the way the Portal gun works and how it can be used in different situations. The feedback from this will apprantly expand Valve's options on how to incorporate into future Half-Life games. Apparantly, since Half-life 2 was done as one massive game, they didn't have the time to do this same sort of concept with the Garvity gun, make a little side game to introduce it the players, apparantly if they had done this and got the feedback, they could have broaded the options a available with the Half-Life 2 physics and the Gravity gun and made it better. Now they have switched the episodic way of making the Half-Life games, it gives them a lot more time to incorporate these little mini games, and also more time to make other games to go with the main game.

Why can't it just be a new character?

It certainly could be. I haven't seen any trailers for Portal myself. I'd rather not over-expose myselft to any content until it's released. The Portal Gun from Opposing Force could certainly be utalized in such a way as to make it as novel as the Gravity Gun.

Considering you have to see the wall you want to shoot with the portal gun, I doubt that is how the Gman travels. He just pops out of thin air, not walls.

It's a full game. Valve have never stated that Portal's a tech demo. People just assume that Portal's a tech demo and then think that Episode Two and TF2 are commercial games.

A tech demo being 3-4 hours? No way. It's commercial, end of story.
