Add new levels/rooms/etc to original game?

Is this possible.. I mean can someone do this? Instead of creating an entirely new game.. mod the original game so theres a few extra areas.. lengthen some parts or shorten others.. put another room where there was none before.. stuff like that. Possible?

The first thing I'd do is allow the black mesa east elevator to go back up, so you can look around and explore - not just see things on a monitor or use the noclip cheat. I also think a couple more intense battles before you enter the Citadel would be cool. How about a detour on Route 17 that takes you through another Ravenholm like town? How about taking the Strider mod and putting it in the game so theres an actual sequence where you hijack a Strider? All just ideas.

Just saying theres a lot of potential to build off what Valve already made.. and make it better.. instead of starting something different from scratch. Possible? Legal?

VALVe are already planning extra content - maybe some of these sections will appear.
And no, they won't be like 'deleted scenes', they'll be all-new storylines.

Yeah I was thinking about all that too, exactly.

So is it possible or legal? And why hasn't anyone done this?

Why is everyone building new games from scratch, when we have a great game here that we can just expand on? I have to belive if there was a way to do this, we could have already been adding on adittional stuff, 2 months after the release, rather than still be waiting for a good mod to come out.

Are you talking about the ATI Levels, the rumours of the Alyx and Dog mod, or something else? :O

All of it VALVe are very likely to do something with the ATi levels, whilst the Alyx-based idea has also pretty much been confirmed (Gabe said he would like explore that idea)
