Before anyone accuses me of pirating this game.... :hmph:
I paid for & downloaded it from steam when it originally was released.
I just built a new PC (with Vista home premium 64) & since I hadn't played HL2 for some time, I decided to re-install it (through Steam).

I started the first game with no problems, played for a few minutes, quick-saved & quit.
When I went back later to reload the save game, AI Disabled appeared.
Even when I start a New Game I get the same error.

I just un-installed & reinstalled HL2 again.......same problem.

I have tried the console commands: ai_disable 0 & ai_debug_actbusy 1.
no difference.

please offer your thoughts.

I also had this problem. Fully legal game, also on Vista 64. The ai_disable 0 command worked for me though. All I can suggest is a full re-boot and maybe download the game again.

I'll try downloading it again. Thanks for the reply ChiliFan.:)

EDIT: the second download didn't work either. See post 09:51 PM for current status.

HAve you tried verifying your game through Steam?

I did. I also defragged the game files.... same problem.

I just un-installed steam entirely (this annoys me because I had other steam games installed as well).
I Went through my registry & deleted all references to steam, valve & HL2.
I am defragging my drive right now & will do a complete re-install / download of steam & games.

Err 2 things.

1. Steam offers the ability to backup games.
2. You can manually backup games by copying the appropriate files from steamapps.

After I uninstalled Steam completely & all registry entries.
I re-installed it & HL2..... now it works fine.

Thanks to all who replied.

I have this ai_disable problem and I got my copy of half life 2 with my orange box..
So what's the deal with this, and why hasn't valve/steam/whoever fixed it? :/ I only found this forum because I want to play the game that I actually BOUGHT.

I did a lot of searching to try and figure out what was going on, I was surprised that everyone who has this problem is immediately accused of pirating the game lol, I feel bad for the people like us that actually bought it and are having these problems. I tried everything deleting, and reinstalling, and validating, and typing in that command, (not in that order..lol) and it seems fine for now, but it seems like an awfully big hassle that a legally bought game shouldn't have. I wonder why valve/steam hasn't fixed this problem with an update or something.. :/

This is an awful bug that wasted like 2 hours of my life that should have been wasted killing head crabs. Although I guess it was kind of funny when the other characters would say, "hey follow me!" and then not go anywhere, I was pretty confused. haha.

Thanks for this thread it helped a lot.

:D

Just in case you're using an nVidia card, remember 6x AA isn't compatible. I played through all of Half-Life 2 the first time in all it's jagged glory because I didn't know that.
