Am I doing something wrong?

I load up Garry's Mod, and whatever map I go on the whole world, including be and the guns, is pink and black chequerboard.(except for some models)
e.g:

Is there any way to correct this?

nope. I have run it again and again, but to no avail.

Ok so it has never worked properly. What games do you have installed? Is this Garry's Mod 9 or 10? Do you use Steam?

Right click on the game in Steam -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache

10 and I have Portal and HL2,

I have got the maps working in portal:

I have impulse 101 activated [it is the only way to get the portal gun]

I will un/reinstall the mod and see if it works then

I don't know what was wrong. But hell, it looks good. I'd prefer Garry's Mod if it did that for me

the reason why I thought of that is because I was watching The IT crowd:
"Hello IT[no chance for caller to speak] Have you tried turning it off 'n' on again?"

Did you ever try verifying the game cache? I'm sure that might have fixed it for you.

yes and no unfortunatley but it works now. What I got when I verifeied was a Half chequerboard world, where the grass and sky were alright, but hats it, and nothing happend on the second verify.
