I was replaying Portal today to calm myself down after totally getting my ass handed to me in CoD4 when I noticed an interesting piece of dialogue which I'd never really thought about before. In one of the test chambers, you're informed that the test has been replaced with a live-fire training program for androids. Before I simply found it amusing, but never fully delved into the implications. Were androids really being trained by Aperture? Perhaps as a security force to protect GlaDOS?

Even better still, could we be facing these androids in Episode 3? I'd love to face some clinical white robots to fight, especially if shooting them would cause them to break into smaller pieces. There's an obvious Aperture presence in Ep. 3, and with portal play seeming less likely, could it be new enemies being what they offer?

A while ago I decided that a mod with the playable character as an android would totally rock. Set in Aperture Science.

I wouldn't trust too much what Glados says, she's a lying bitch. Androids on Borealis? No. There are enough synths in the game coming along with the Combine, some Earthly enemy synths would be pointless regarding the gameplay...

I wouldn't read into it like that. The reason why, is that the androids are very easy to get round (they deactivate when they lay down!?) and are strategically placed for you be able to complete the test chamber with the ASPHD effectively. The reason it's been replaced with a 'live fire course' was more likely an attempt to intimidate you (which GLADOS loves to do).

She does also say 'android hell is a real place, where you will be sent at the sign of defiance' which I assume is a message saved for the androids which is bizarre, but most likely another GLADOS joke.

I wasn't referring to the turrets, I meant other androids being developed, with the turrets in that specific level being used to train them. Of course it's always worth taking what GlaDOS says with a pinch of salt, but I consider the possibility of actual androids more interesting.

Not denying the existance of aforementioned androids, I believe Aperture Science was competing against Black Mesa for portal technology. I don't see why AS would go through the trouble of designing and constructing such androids, even to test their own portal technology (the ASHPD). It actually seems like androids would completely kick a Portal Gun user's ass as they would be fighting a moving enemy that could easily dodge the portals and kill the test subject. The turrets were sufficient and served their purpose well.

Due to mandatory scheduled maintenance, the appropriate chamber for this testing sequence is currently unavailable. It has been replaced with a live-fire course designed for military androids. The Enrichment Center apologizes for the inconvenience and wishes you the best of luck.

Although not confirmed Chell most likely is not an android.
