i have a tracktrain (a cable car) that is supposed to move in a westerly direction to its first path_track, and the door where the player enters/exits is on the south side. if i build it with the door on the south side, it flips 180 degrees (so the door is on the north side) as soon as it hit the button to start it moving. if i do as the developer wiki suggests -

Build your train so that the front of the train is facing down the X axis. When it spawns it will automatically rotate to face the next path_track on the path.

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Func_tracktrain

- and build it with the door on the north side, it spawns with the door on the north side (and i can't get in because the platform is on the south side)

i just want a cable car that will run (without user control) like the train at the start of HL.

once it gets moving it's fine. it's just this damned orientation thing that's bugging me. any suggestions?

If i understood correctly, you need to go to flags and check fixed orientation, and also at the globals or whatever where its says change angles: never(fixed orientation)

well that occurred to me but doesn't that just prevent the tracktrain from turning at path corners? i do want it to turn. i'll give it a try though, see what happens

Tracktrains should be made facing east. They are reoriented to match the angles of their first stop target.

yes, that's what i thought, however when i build the thing facing east, it spawns facing east (i.e. opposite to where i want it to face) and the doors (which should start open) start closed because their angles are reversed left to right (and they're on the wrong side)

if i build it facing west, it spawns in facing the right way around, but then does a 180deg 'flip' on starting motion, which is also no good

i have the first path_track flagged as facing direction of travel, which is due west on the level

grr

i've also tried setting the angles of the first stop path_track at 0 180 0 and setting it's orientation to use this angle, but still no joy

it's beginning to look to me like you either run your train starting east or no dice
