I don't think anyone's forgotten about the massive uproar that occured online and around the world when Nintendo gave their code-named Revolution console its official name, the Wii. Some thought it was such an awful name that they said it must be just a "joke" so that they could announce the "real" name at E3.

But of course, that turned out not to be the case. But the ol' rumor mill is flying again with an alleged quote from a Nintendo marketing rep. The people at Game For Wii have posted first-hand accounts from "Mike", who says the name "Wii" has potential negative implications for the console's success.

Tbh, they should change it to Rev.

Short for Revolution.

The suggested names on that article suck.

Some of the suggested names are: Nintendo GameZone, Nintendo FutureNation and Nintendo GlobalBOX. Nintendo denies this possible name change.
NONONO!!

I like the Wii.

lol those suggested names are hilarious :D

Im starting to like the name Wii, but rev sounds like a cool idea too.

you're not exactly losing serious customers if they choose which console to buy based on the name

True dat.

They should call it the Nin Rev Wii.

You'd be surprised, sure hardcore old-sk00l nintendoers aren't going to care about a name but the name Wii might put off potential casual customers. Nintendo don't care who's buying their console as long as people are buying it. A kid for instance (who Nintendo usually market to) certainly might be put off by the name.

good point.

i think it's a pretty cool name anyway :E so it doesn't matter to me

The whole "wii" shock factor kind of died for me when Sony one-upped them with their Conference. You know, the one where the historical Giant Enemy Crabs got attacked by Kaz Hirai for massive $599US damage with his +3I wand of Riiiidge Racer. Nintendo couldn't even pull it all back by having Miyamoto wave his hands around like a moron.

The name Wii makes sense. I two "i"s looking like two people and the full name sounding like "we." It's really smart. But in a consumer aspect, it's dumb.

u b rite holmes.

"Wii" is a name they probably put a lot of thought into, and people are evidently warming to it as time progresses, because it makes more sense the more you think about it. However, Average Joe doesn't think about the title of his games machines too hard, and if his initial reaction is the same as everyone else's, he'll probably pass it by permenantly.

Haha, I never thought of that. I always thought of it as wee, or weewee, and at first I thought they just took the F out of WiFi.

Wii sounds ok to non-English speakers, but since English speakers represent the most important share of the market for this console, I suggest they call it the ... nevermind. Wii all the way

That's what I always thought, but I always second-guessed myself, thinking I was reading too deep into the name. :/

It took a little getting used to, but I agree when they say this:

The "ii" spelling is intended to represent "both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play." It may also be worth noting that "ii" means "good" in Japanese.

Nintendo sums up the name change with the following comments. "So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

Its a great name guys. I could care less as long as they keep dropping seriously fun games!

I remember when Microsoft announced the next Windows named was Vista and many people didn't like it.

Wii like Vista idk its grown on me. I don't mind it that much.

Wii is a little silly, but I've gotten to like it. "Rev" would be pretty awesome, though :D

But wow, those proposed names really are horrendous. The "GlobalBOX"? Sounds like a derogatory term for a loose woman :|

Nintento FutureNation? For ****s sake. GIVE ME A JOB AT NINTENDO. I could think up a thousand better names.

Wii grew on me. It was stupid and hilarious at first, but now its just a name. Figured that woulda happened.

Also, I'm pretty sure the name won't be changing according to a lot of Nintendo stuff I've heard. At least I hope not.

Wii Want Revolution! Wii Want Revolution!

When I read the article I guess it's been associated to urine, which I find really funny, mostly because I didn't think of it. All I know is that the name Gamezone, really sucks, I could come up with something better in like 2 seconds, like the Nintendo dog toy.

"Nintendo GameZone, Nintendo FutureNation and Nintendo GlobalBOX"

I would rather buy a Nintendo Cockurine than any of those shit-awful names.

i dont see why they didnt just keep revolution... its a cool word.

Wii is the shit. No name change ftw!

Meh, doubt it.

More I think about it, more I think Wii fits perfectly. It's bold, just like the console.

*rolls around in a barrel full of Wii*

Now, where were we?

Wii is an awesome name. Or they could combine the names and call it WiiRev.
