Antlions

One interesting thing that i found was the fact that the antlions cant swim, (near the bit mentioned before with the crane and running away combine), in fact they die pretty quickly in water, a bit too quickly for normal suffocation or at least by our standards. This either leads me to believe that they have a nasty reaction to water, or that their lungs work differently to ours in that they suffocate quicker, but then why wudnt they suffcoate under the sand?.....surely a creature that lives in sand on beaches naturally, would be able to cope with water. So they must of evolved from some sort of desert planet, whether this be xen or somewhere else.

Or they can't swim. Think about it - their limbs don't work very well for propulsion in water, so they can't keep their faces afloat. Chances are, they have a really fast respiration rate, and so drown pretty quickly.

What if, ANtlion was a creature that Valve just made up during the course of HL2? :O That would explain why they have no references in the first game :P

You're absolutely, right, you know.

It makes sense that antlions are from a desert-like part of xen that we do not see (how likely is it that the only landmasses in xen are small and extremely moist? not likely). this is why we dont see antlions, fast or poison headcrabs in black mesa, because just like here on earth, there are (usually) faster or more poisonous variations of creatures in deserts or harsh environments.
