i have been mapping for half-life series for at least 6 years. the reason i migrated to hl2 mapping is due to obvious advantages of source engine. but i am really dissapointed of the compile speed of hammer4's compiler. My PC is not a high end machine, but good enough to run hl2 in medium settings except HDR.this is the config. AMD Sempron 2.6, 512 mb ram 400 Mhz, GeforceFX 5700 128mb.

I would like to know whether there is any alternative compiler for Hammer4. mapping using compilers viz. zoner was like a breeze way back when i used to map for hl.

Unfortunately, Valve are very slow updating the SDK codebase even though they update the SDK often, so any custom compilers will lag behind in new features. Also, no prodigal coder has shown up who can do to Vtools what Zoner did to Qtools.

Perhaps it isn't the compiler's fault. Use more func_details.

Not sure if anyone here ever used Entdata optimizer a tool my mate Fragbait0 made for HL1 but a hl2 version seems unlikely. Basicly it ripped usless entity info ie light entities after a lightmap has been produced.

One rather elegant piece of perl I might add.

I'm still waiting for someone to do that to the source tools. I do not undestand how VALVe or anyone else for that matter could actually get a decent map happening without ZHLT.
