Artificial Intelligence in Half Life 1/2

Hi all,

Not sure if i should post here so i've posted in 2 places...

Basically i have been given an AI paper i have to do on game development. I was considering doing it on the Half Life 1 and 2. My main question is can any1 point me in the direction of resources on artifical intelligence for half life 1 and half life 2 in quite a lot of detail. Also i would like to demonstrate maybe by developing levels & adding bots for both of the 2 games, and show how the game has come on over the last 6 years.

Is all this feasible? Over will it take me too long to work out how to develop levels and add bots. Also how easy is it to demonstrate basic levels of AI for the 2 games.

A Very Interesting idea. For your purposes, you could develop simple levels with complex routes and obstacles - clearly, the graphical quality isn't a problem, so you can pour all you available time into make these "AI Assault Courses". Interesting thing would be to try and develop the exact same level for both games, add an AI entity in and note how they behave differently. Try the same thing with groups of AI as well - the HL games have AI that is supposed to work together. As far as I noticed, HL1 soldiers grenade themselves whilst HL2 soldiers avoid it. One thing to test ^^

It's sure possible... but I wouldn't personally know how to go about doing these things. That's probably a question better suited to the folks in the "Source Editing & Development" section. As for how much time... depends on how much time you got, and how much time you're prepared to give.

Hmm..maybe the raising the bar book has AI info for HL2.
 
thanks very much for the quick response, i have 2 weeks to get it all done. most background info and writing can be done in a few days. so alot of my time has to go into showing how far the ai has come on and demonstrating it.
 
You would do better doing a paper on AI between Quake 2 and Half Life 1.

Agreed. While the AI of HL2 is without doubt the best atm, the leap from Quake > HL was much greater.
