I was just looking on the half-life2 website about redeeming the coupon for HL2....

How many of you realize you need the UPC Code cutout from the box AND the receipt to get HL2. I got my 9800XT for Christmas so I don't have a receipt and the box is long gone. I held on to the coupon, but I didn't realize I would need anything else. Does this mean I won't get my free copy of HL2?

The information IS printed on the coupon. So no your not getting hl2 for free.

You only need the UPC and receipt if you want to mail it in and receive a retail copy of HL2. Of course, with that, you'd have to wait.. 3-6 weeks for delivery?
Just scratch it off and DL it on Steam for free.

When the hell can we get a more definitive word from Valve about how the Steam distro is going to work??? This has nothing to do with gameplay "secrets" or anything. People need advance warning about how they'd like the purchase the game. It would seem to be in Valve's interest to let people know about this ASAP so instead of people pre-ordering from stores, they can choose to d'load from Steam, thus making Valve much more money. Does anyone else see the logic of this?

We know how Steam distribution is going to work.

When the game goes gold, Steam will have an option for pre-ordering HL2. You put in your payment details and then HL2 will start pre-loading, downloading an encrypted version of the game on to your HDD. On the day of the games release, an update will be sent through the Steam network so if you have pre-ordered HL2 then it will get unlocked and you will be able to play.

No, I know all that. What I want to know are pricing structures and incentives to download. Valve has said they'll add stuff to make it worthwhile for people to download and I want to know what. That makes a difference in what people choose to do.

Because we now get in trouble for being assholes in threads like this...

Elderwyrm, there have been alot of thread discussing this topic in the past. Please use the forum's search function before making yet another thread about a topic that we have all discussed.

I don't see what the big mystery is here. If you want Valve/VU to send you a boxed copy of the game, send in your coupon, receipt and UPC code. If you want to download off Steam, enter your coupon key into it.

Simple.

Welcome to the Forums

I'll just download the ISO off someone and use my CD-key. :)
If they attempt to change the cd-key system so we can't do that, then I'm sure someone will hack it real fast.
