autoexec problem

i have created an autoexec file and it works fine, except for when i try to get it to run a custom cfg file. i have "exec custom.cfg" as a line, and when i boot up half-life 2, nothing is different (even though it says "execing custom.cfg" in the console), i can type in exec custom in the console and it will work. does anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT:
my custom cfg file contains code from the skill.cfg, and i just noticed that skill.cfg is execing after custom.cfg, so it overrrides it. how can i set it so custom.cfg is execed last, or set it so skill.cfg doesnt exec?
