Does anyone still play it?
I'm reinstalling it atm.

Forgotten Hope and Desert Combat were awesome back in the day...

Maybe we could get together and play a game or two?

I would if I had it. I <3 desert combat, you wont find a better Helo pilot than me in that game.

Too bad the Helicopters don't control the same way anymore in BF2 :(

Eh, I installed it and hated it to death, but for some reason I LOVE BF2...well, LOVED more like it.. Anyway, ya

Heathen!...

My only gripe with BF1942 is the infantry combat feels really awkward, hell just walking around feels awkward.

Yeah, I know what you mean, lucid.

I have BF1942 but I haven't played it in ages... I used to have some amazing games in DC, on oilrig

God, I have no idea where my copy of 1942 is for the life of me. But yeah, Desert Combat was awesome. So was Eve of Destruction (which I liked more than Vietnam, by a lot)

Wewt, just played a 20 minute game on Omaha.

The game is still damn fun, despite all of the bunny hopping-grenade spammers, and the random crashing...

I installed it back over the summer for a go, was really fun. Just that infantry combat is so much worse than BF2/2142 it's hard to go back. Meh, maybe this weekend I'll reinstall it and join you. :)

Yeah, I still have 1942. Hmm. Haven't played in ages.

Redownloaded Desert Combat, if anyone has the game and mod installed... we should play together sometime today. :D

I always disliked BF1942 - it was so ... unpolished
weapons were crap, tanks were like slow shopping trolleys and the aircraft defied physics in unbelievable ways
vietnam I liked alot - spawn raping killed the game sadly, it was just too easy to do so

1942 was great. But if you played BF2 first then you wouldn't have much appreciation for it. I still play 1942, even more so than BF2.

I guess I just really had a bad experience when I played it. Hell, that experience almost made me not even think about trying BF2. I bought '42, and played it single player some, and thought, "Well, this sucks, maybe with real people.."

But then I got online, and it was pretty much the same thing. Pretty much nobody talked except for the usual CS chat of, "OMFG THATS BS..HOW THE HELL!?" or, "LOLOLOL NUB!"...so lack of teamwork. I couldn't find anybody to do anything strategic with me..they just wanted to shoot. And it was on every server, so it wasn't the selection....

Then the spawn camping. I know, another spawn camping complainer. But when you're first trying to play the game, and you don't even have time to change weapons before you die....that really turns one off to the game. Those instances of my playing really turned me off to the whole thing...

It's true it's not as squad-based as BF2 is, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun... for me atleast, I've always been a sort of lone wolf-type guy.
But if you ask for reinforcements(F2 F2), they're guaranteed to help you out.

As for the CS kiddies, I haven't encountered any whiners at all.
Whenever someone talks it's usually to talk trash, or to just stir up a conversation.

Spawn camping is strictly enforced on alot of servers, so I'm not sure when you played the game last... but you won't be getting killed when you spawn at a uncapturable base.
As for capturable bases, of course they'll spawn camp... it's part of getting the flag.

the biggest problem with the battlefield series is that spawn raping exists at all - being killed over and over and over before you can even take a step is the single most game destroying thing in the series. It's why jets are justifiably hated so much, drop bombs to kill newly spawned players, return to airfield to rearm and be back in time to kill the victims again. Rinse and repeat - Bf2 isn't as bad except on ironically the most popular maps (Karkand and Wake - people are just that stupid all for the sake of poorly designedmaps with linear Counterstrike choke points) compared to Vietnam where spawn raping was just ridiculously easy. You could park a tank in the street and the other team would be all in view of your machine gun or just spin nearly vertical to the ground in circles with a helicopter in a 10m radius which people to this day credit as realistic...

DCF = best mod evar!

Me too,

a couple of things I just loved doing in that mod, such as: Fly a A10 Tank killer, driving a T-72, & no fly zone was the shit; 'nother favorate map of mine was the classic Berlin with capture the flag 24/7.

Other big time favorate's were:

  • DC_Oil rigs

  • DC_Desert shield

  • DC_Basrah_nights

Also do not forget Forgotten hope, ahh I can't wait for FH2!

Hehe... I don't like BF 1942 for realism or accuracy. In fact, realism and accuracy are the last things I think of when it comes to 1942. I just like it because it's damn fun. There is little to no teamwork true, unless you have friends and keep track of them. But the goals are the same as in BF2, take control of the flags. So your never really alone by yourself.

Yeah DCF had great times...I cant count the number of times on El Al I would wingtip an enemy sniper on the mountain range on the south end of the map with my Su-25 and see the long list of profanities roll across the screen :)

Or the days where it was almost impossible to fill a humvee up with c4 and drive it into a tank...or making gun runs down the streets of Basrah in the Little Bird and Blackhawk :)

DCX (Homing missiles ftw!) and DCR (realism!)> DC and DCF

I was more of an EOD and Pirates mod guy that dc and FH was good (200+ yard plus kill with a garand on one of the D-Day maps)

I still install '42 occasionally but ever since they released the 1.61b patch my performance has gone south (on any size server) but I don't know about mods.

I reinstalled it and DCF last night :D

DCR was fun and nicely realistic, but I think the most people I ever saw playing DCR at once was like 12....
