Beat game, want to mess with console, trouble getting it

I finished the game, quite the ending, and I have look at like 2 sites for instructions to get the console, i pasted what they said to put in the target line

C:\Installed Directory\hl2.exe -console

But when I do it it says it doesnt it says it's not vaild, did I mess it up?

Thanks, that's so simple, why do some places say type this, the type this, then load it again......, well there is probably a resaon, but I dont know anything about programming.

you can activate the console in game by going to options, click on the keyboard tab, click advanced, then check the box next to "enable developer's console".
