Much to my disapproval I was forced to dl something last night. I wanted to play but was forced to wait. After waiting more than 45 minutes for this "improvement" to an already working game I had hoped to - finally - play. No such luck.

When the game booted I was seeing letters everywhere. Try to change weapons and the pictures of the 9mm, shotgun, crowbar, all the weapons, had been changed to letters. The crowbar is now a 'c'. The handgrenade is now a 'k'. What's worse is that I no longer have crosshairs for aiming. Instead I have a small case, bold arial 'q' to look through.

Even rebooting didn't fix the problem. It's not that one can't select a weapon. The labels will tell me what I'm supposed to be looking at/selecting if I don't already know. And the picture of what's in Freeman's hand is accurate. But com'on. You try aiming thru the hole in a 'q' and see if it doesn't put you off sum'at.

Now what do I do?

well this isn;t really going to help but i remember the pics are the weapons and crosshair are saved as a font file maybe theres some sort of mix up

Open the half-life 2 folder, do a search for .ttf files, delete them, restart steam. There.

Go to C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\USERNAME\half-life 2\hl2\resource and delete the font files in there. That should fix it.

steam://validate/220
Click that. What it will do is do a full check of your cache file. It will then repair anything that needs to be fixed. Should work.

Thank you

To everyone that answered, I'm grateful. I assume that those who suggested looking for the .ttf file were correct but I went with Chris' answer.

A brief description of what happened before some questions: Clicked the link and got a blank, white browser page. Nothing else happened for a while until I clicked the "reload" button (maybe it was already connecting in the background, don't know). The Steam 'window' came up and scanned my system. Once it reached 100% the window disappeared - but my system was still downloading stuff.

Being paranoid, I first checked the game. It seemed to be alright once again. So I disconnected from the net and ran Ad-Aware. Just cookies.

So, Chris, did I cut off something that Steam was still downloading? Should I run the Validate process again and let it continue? Why was there no window or, for that matter, any programs or processes listed taskmanager if Steam was still working? Is there documentation on this?
