I was watching the bink traptown video and noticed this, it happens right when Gordon throws the box in the beginning. Watch were the first combine solider appears off in the distance, he just pops into the map by the railing. I know that this has no significant meaning but I thought that it was pretty lame, at least make him walk in or something.

Damn scripted A.I.

...which made hl2 look better than it is...

Ain't that a B. I remember when I got my copy of Condition Zero, popped in that Half Life 2 demo CD, everything blew me away. I was so hyped up about Half Life 2. Then finally the game came out, and I, along with others never ever finally got to see any of that stuff. It was shot to the heart (not really) But what I think is those "tech demos" is what sold the game, not the game.

BTW everyone, that map is now a Deathmatch map, I believe its called dm_phystown. Go download that to experience what we missed.

That talk about "it was only tech demo" makes me sick. I never knew that it wasn't in game... they normaly said "half-life 2 video" or "half-life 2 demo"... bah, but now it "was already known that it wasn't in the game, in fact, they said it won't be"...

Now when half life 3 get in the stores, i won't buy, first i will try it. :\

I don't see the humor in that statement, or the requirement for a smiley.

It was suppose to be a joke, sorry I forgot the sarcasim tags ;)

Oh, get over it already. A game in the development process is NEVER the same as the final cut, GET OVER IT!

I was really hoping that I'd be able to run around City 17 and steal blueberry pies off of windowsills from loving Combine wives. Then I'd be able eat the pie while having the physics engine being beautifully utilized, realistically dropping the crumbs from my mouth and passing the sweet blueberry goodness down into my stomach. I'd then be able to use the pie tin as a bludgeoning instrument.

Sadly, Valve did not allow me to do this. And even though they never even said that I'd be able to do anything like that, I'll still interpret its absence as a personal stab in the back and an attempt to cheat the little man and grab his cash, even though all he wants is some innocent pie-eating simulation.

Naturally, I then murdered Gabe Newell with a poison chicken wing.

They used the 2002 proof of concept stuff because they couldn't afford to waste any time.

Funny that people still bring this up, with the knowledge of 1) a lot changes in game development 2) Valve indicated that E3 2003 was more of a techdemo rather than gameplay 3) they released the real gameplay vids on E3 2004, it was obvious for everyone that this was the real gameplay and yet they still complain. Stupid people.

Brilliance.

i dont understand the complaint that e3 demos were missing in the game. instead of playing something that you have seen before and know whats going to happen, valve changed things around for the better and we were suprised when we played it. i was glad when i heard that most of the tech demo areas were changed around.

Its not that it wasn't in, just that it made the game look a whole lot less linear and more interactive than what it turned out to be. He's just dissappointed that no one told him it was a tech demo (same for me). I am also grateful that they changed it. I remember playing expecting to know what to do then being pleasently surprised that it was different.

The trouble is that It wasn't all the bling bling effects missing, it's just that its super linear, that's what got me.

Why do people trip over HL2's linearity when it's in fact not more linear than any other FPS out there (less actually, you can skip certain extra parts, and use different approaches in combat, with physics and all) and the end-product is nothing different than what was shown or said?

Closed for blindingly obvious reasons.

(spam/flames for some of the posters in here who obviously won't understand)
