What AI woudl you rather they use to code the marines in Blac Mesa Source, because I've heard things about the old AI.

For those of you who don't know, there are some people using programs to 'update' Half-Life 1 with Half-Life 2 graphics and so on.

Original marines were idiots (not a marine insult, just an AI insult, the actual Marines are uber bad ass) the only reason they were 3 times tougher than overwatch is because they were tougher to kill and their weapons did way more damage. I sometimes watched them run back and forth not knowing what to do, helpless puppies with automatic weapons. Now a HL marine with HL2 overwatch AI.... :rolling:

Good point, I just heard (and maybe I was confused) some one say that the HL1 Marines were smarter... now I remember sneaking up on one trapped in a corner... He was running back and fourth... He moved pretty fast for a guy that was stuck... with a Cross Bow Bolt

Dunno. If they have less HP perhaps it whould be cool seeing them with Combine Ai.

HL1 AI for sure. If those guys and combine had a fight the marines would wipe the floor......... never mind.

The only reason the Marines would win because they have 10x more health than the Combine. If they had normal health, they'd lose pretty badly. Instead, they have super-human health. Anyone who holds the idea that somehow the Marines have better AI than the Combine, then they are an idiot.

Why is it that people think that this is the general Half-Life section?

The section called Half Life 2?
This section is for quibbling about plot contrivances like "Does Gordon wear a helmet?"

u said quibbling ... lol

and idc about their AI it certainly could use some improvement but the thing that needs to change the most is their hp.

Yeah, but Half-Life 2 is more of a forum FOR Half-Life 2, this one is just general Half Life... or it seems like it... Because there is no specification of "Half-Life2" in "Single Player Mythology (Spoilers)"

This is not a general forum, it for the the discussion of story. Hence the "Mythology".

I thought that the tactics used by the marines is actually more enjoyable gameplay wise. I love the aggressive shotgunner who would suddenly come out from the side unnoticed (while I was battling long range with the machine gunners) crouch down and blast 3 shells in my face and before I could recover they would retreat and get behind some cover. And their grenading *seems* much better too. I remember playing on a rail and at the part where you come to the launch center... I came to a corner and was behind some crates just trying to peek to see how many guys were, and there a beret guy saw me yelled "we've got freeman" and launched a AR, curved gently over my cover and hit right in my face! I mean I can't calculate the trajectory that well! Some other points...

- They would retreat and hide behind something if they got injured and wont come out.
- Co-ordinated grenades. I remember getting 2 grenades at the same time from different directions.
- Generally far more aggressive overall

I think the thing about the marines is that

1. They're all Olympic sprinters on steroids

2. They keep shooting even if they're hit unlike the wussy Overwatch

3. Combine soldiers die too quickly to show very much AI. Look at how many weapons give a one shot kill. You'll only see the AI if you take on an Elite with a pistol, or else fire very slowly.

That is exactly what I hated about the marines. Superhuman grenading. It is not fun to turn a corner and explode before having any time to react. And that is exactly what happens. You hear a "poof" and you have about enough time to say "sh-" before getting killed.

Combine do that too, it's just rarer for them to get that injured and not killed.

That's not co-ordinated, that's just two independant marines deciding to throw grenades at once.

They charged head-on more anyway, I find. But that's not exactly the best tactics to use in a real-life combat situation :P

Seeing as that's a silent e, your extending of the word doesn't change the prununciation at all. Also, get on MSN!

Old idiot marines ran and hid behind boxes, ran somemore, and then died.

Old Marines = phail

Yeah, this is exactly what happened. Exactly. I think I managed "oh S-". Me and my brother (who was watching me play at that moment) just looked at each other thinking "those guys are good!". But I really really enjoyed those situations.... unlike most people here it seems. :( they made me feel like I am just a scientist in a tin suit with limited combat training and I am up against one of the deadliest combat units on earth, and they should not be taken lightly.

I can't speak for anyone else, but peronally, I like enemies who die after I've put a clip into them. There were times when I was playing HL Source and clealry saw a blood patch on a marine's helmet. "Hey buddy! I just shot you in the head. Don't you think it's time to call it a life?"

It was fun how I had to waste 50 bullets to one marines head in HL1 to get it killed.

lol @ pedant

On-topic:
I haven't played far enough into HL1 to come up against the marines, but I think the Combine are smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. That's particularly evident in the plaza fight scene in Anticitizen One - they avoid your mines, rout you out of cover, flank you, etc.

Your correction -
Seeing as that's a silent e, your extending of the word doesn't change the prununciation at all.
- I found amusing in its pedanticism, given that it had an error of its own. :)

Ah, I didn't know what the word pedant meant. Now that I've actually looked it up, I don't understand why you used the damn word :O

HL1 Marines plant Grenades at their own feet and sit on them like Penguins. They cannot run and fire and the same time, and they cannot fire at anything more than about 45 degrees above or below them. In the right position, their AI functions well enough and their ridiculously high HP allows them plenty of time to show off. The rest of the time, you find their huge-blind spot area and glock the lot of them to death without a single bullet ever hitting you.

Combine win.

Add more health to Combine AI.

I hope it comes after, to make more use of the new effects and things coming.
It seems like it's on track for an end-of-decade release.

How long did the original Half-life take, from start to finish?

I am an idiot, but i find the marines to have somewhat good squad AI. They flank, they use grenades to flush opponents out, and they used cover. However, they seem to be stupid when they are alone. Still, Combine had better AI, and was just more fun to fight, so I choose Combine.

The Marine's had bullet-proof helmets. Thus if you were shooting them there it would seem like they had rediculous health. Otherwise their health was quite reasonable.

I vote for the combine AI because supposedly that is what the Marines use in Half-Life: Source and I find them to be much more challenging in that game. They are very agressive but also good at flanking you. When you can see them they start shooting and the moment you duck behind cover they are on the move again.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Shooting them in the head (and helmet) does twice as much damage as shooting their body.

Yeah. Alien grunts, on the other hand... their shoulderpads are pretty strong.
