Brightness or Gamma to Dark

Firstly played upto the end of Route Kanal in about 2 hours and loving it. Only trouble is the brightness setting for me is way to dark. I know the first response that some idiot will come out with is increase your monitor brightness and it is always set to 100%. I get the same problem in origianl counterstrike and doom 3. However i fixed it in doom by adjusting the config files brightness and gamma. However i cant find it in the half life 2 config files at all. There just doesnt seem to be anything that deals with gamma or brightness. I have a radeon 9800xt and have the 4.10 drivers installed. The 4.11 apparently have some problems solved so i will look into that but what im wondering is does anyone have a clue how to make the game brighter. Ive adjusted the ingame slider to 1.6 and its still just to dark.

yo this might help, i experienced the same problem on my 9600XT, the gamma is way to dark, so hope this helps ya a bit..
load up hl2, when u loaded a savegame, just hit ~ for the console
("hl2.exe -console" - u know) and type:

mat_fullbright 1

then u will notice a huge boost in gamma, i actually had to slide my gamma down (up? to somewhere like 2.1 to make it look right(instead of the 1.6. value)
(oh or use mat_monitorgamma <value> in console

I use the 4.11 drivers.. didnt notice any difference between the 4.10 and 4.11 gamma-settings in hl2..

Two things to help.

gamma 2.5

2) Download and install Powerstrip from http://www.entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm
This little app allows you to use hotkeys while in the game to instantlly adjust your gamma and brightness. It has other uses as well, but I don't overclock, so I don't use those other tools. My ATI card is supposed to allow me to use hot keys for gamma in a game, but they never work in any HL game. So, I use Powerstrip and life is great!!
