So early on Tuesday morning I went through the web-based tech support process on steampowered.com to ask a question:
Subject: Upgrading
How do I upgrade my retail-purchased Half-Life 2 standard? I want to purchase and download Half-Life: Source and Day of Defeat: Source but I accidentally bought the retail version that only has HL2 and CS Source.
Finally, today, Valve responded.
You have reported an error reading 'Map Version Differs...". There is a new release of Steam that should clear up this problem. If you have been experiencing problems such as crashing during gameplay or startup of Half-Life 2, please restart Steam(exit, then restart), once you have restarted and downloaded the update click the following link:

Ummm...thanks Valve CS. You guys rock. You screw retail customers, then you wait 4 days to respond to their problem, and you respond to the wrong one. =)
