Damn, this is annoying. *mild spoiler?*I've just shut the Kvatch Oblivion gate and gone back to speak to the head guard, Matius.

The trouble is, as soon as he shouts 'For Kvatch!' and runs off, the 2 guards standing there turn on me and beat me senseless. They're fine before I speak to him. Matius and the guy I brought back through the portal are no problem, they just run off through the city gate, but these other 2 idiots...

I reloaded a save from inside the oblivion portal, 10 minutes before I shut the gate, but the same thing happened again when I finished. The only other save is from before oblivion, and I don't want to have to do that whole damn section again, especially if these guys might just attack me anyway. In theory I can run through the gate and carry on, but I don't want to do all that work and maybe have these arseholes carry on attacking me later.

I don't want to have to kill them and get infamy (besides I need them for the city). They won't accept my yield. I have a pacify + serenity scroll but they seem to do nothing.

Any ideas? Any console commands that might bump their disposition so they'll accept my yield? Or just to turn them non-hostile?

Damn, I was hoping they literally screwed you, would have been a funny AI bug

Did you perhaps attack any guards by mistake in Oblivion? It could be a possible cause. Like one time I was assisting a guard in the wilderness, and after we finished fighting off the enemies he just turned on me. :|

I find the guards everywhere annoying, they're either f*cking psychic or just stupid.

I've smacked quite a lot of them around, since my aim and FPS are terrible. But you usually have a 3 hit leeway during a fight, and anyway if it was because of that wouldn't they just attack me on sight? I can even talk to them before I speak to Matius and they do nothing to me (but they only give me a one-liner so I can't bump up their disposition either).

I thought the same as you, that maybe I smacked them both during the fight they're having against the scamps when you first arrive, and that this was somehow a delayed reaction. However, I reloaded my save from before the portal and tried smacking them a few times - they just attack back, then and there. I don't know why they would wait for me to go off to oblivion and back before attacking me, and even then only after I speak to their boss and assent to storming the city... Irritating.

this kind of stuff is really a shame
i experienced something similar with the last thieves guild quest
SPOILER
when i finally made it into the elder scroll library, instead of greeting me and thinking i was the lady, they immediately attacked me if i walked around(didnt sneak)

anyways, i dunno what to suggest besides SAVE OFTEN so you can just reload

This is looking more and more like a real showstopper. I've realised that Matius' disposition is 0 when I'm talking to him, so the only thing stopping him from attacking me is the fact he's a key character. I can bump his disposition up fine, but not the other 2 guys.

It gets worse though - I can make it into the chapel, past the ridiculously tough levelled enemies and every single altar in there says stuff like 'Repent for your crimes, wicked one!' My infamy is ZERO, and my fame is 7. I'm thinking that even if I make it through Kvatch somehow (which looks impossible anyway) my game is screwed, unless this is linked to vampirism.

If I could find a way to hack NPC disposition it might work out.

update:
Might have found a workaround. I did some research and found a bunch of console commands, including ones to modify the attributes of NPCs. Unfortunately it seems like there is no way to just modify 'disposition' which is apparently calculated from a bunch of different attributes, although I did manage to confirm that these guys' disposition towards me is indeed 0.

What I have been able to do is change their 'aggression' attribute from 5 to 0, which stops them attacking me, by clicking them and then using the command:
modav aggression -5

There are also commands to 'stopcombat' but this didn't seem to work. Anyone with a similar problem to mine can try what I tried, but I don't think it will work unless you have a chance to do it to them before they turn on you.
