you have the HL2 CD's but not a CD-KEY?
the only way thats possible is that you have a pirated version.

well...maybe you lost the jewel case...okay, so then if you have registered your copy of the game already, it should be tied to the Steam account that you registered with.

as for purchasing via Steam, once you decide on a package and go through the neccessary billing stuff, and everything is approved, Steam should/will allow you to download all the contents of the package purchased.

or he can still close steam and use the cds to install either way works

I think Bull Goose Loony is trying to say, that he doesn't have a retail copy, but he can borrow the CDs from a friend ;)
Tell me if I'm wrong ;)

If this is the thing, yes - you can buy HL2 on Steam, you will be able to download it. And yes, you can use the GCF files from the CDs you borrowed - just shutdown Steam and copy the files to SteamApps. You may have to rename them accordingly, like source_content.gcf to "half-life 2 content.gcf" - I helped a friend of mine install HL2 that way.
...or will Steam do the renaming automaticaly?

hmm..don't think he can do that... Steam probably won't allow him because the CD-KEY has already been associated with his friend's Steam account.

if he purely wants to use the CD's to save download time then thats a different story and yeah that is possible...i think.

the cds have no effect on any cd key bought off of retail the cd key is only used for steam. all the cds are are just gcfs to install which you can also download off of steam
