C++ runtime error

i was just having this problem with hl2.exe (half-life 2 ep.1)

i start it up, click new game (just got the game) and it goes past the loading screen, but then *WOMP* i got an error that said:

TITLE: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
INFO:
Runtime Error!

Program: C:\...blah blah location \hl2.exe


The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information




it also happens when i continue the game and get in any loading zone (like when you're going up the stairs top the roof)

Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3
BRAND/MODEL: DELL Dimension E510 customised

i really need some help with this
ONE LAST THING! i got this disk off of ebay and it was an early editon where it is not on steam

i really need some help, and i think i might be missing some files in the game directory (due to the lack of.dll's inthe game directory) PLEASE HELP!!!

Install Steam, activate your copy by plugging in your CD-Key, download updates, run game again then report back here.

If you've bought a second hand copy of the game from ebay, you've been ripped off. Once a cd key has been activated, it is tied to an account. You can try contacting Steam support, but you'd be better off buying a new, legitimate copy. Half Life 2 is currently on sale on steam for 4.99 USD.
