I've been away from HL2 for months, so forgive me if this is an obvious question to yo all. But someone in a gaming shop told me theres a new version of the HL2 SP game thats downloadable. I recall aftermath was what everyone was waiting for last time i was reading any HL2 forums, and he said thats the one tho they renamed it something different. Unfortunaltly i can't use steam because my PC at home is dial up. But what i want to know is what it is now called and if there is any way i can get it w/o using steam?

its called hl2 episode 1 (ridiculous i know:()
it's not out yet - April
it will initially be steam only - a retail version will eventually possibly even on the steam launch day will be released

No, there isn't a HL2 update that is downloadable without Steam.
What you are talking about (Aftermath) has been renamed into Episode 1.
This makes the full name Half-Life 2 : Episode 1. Yes, it is cheesy. No, it has not been released yet.
Have fun now :p

EDIT: Damn you John D: *shakes nubhelping fist*

Muhhahahaha
The Beerend has been bested in mortal combat :)

Let me get this straight, you want to download a HL2 update via a site with your dial up, but can't update via Steam because of dial up...Maybe I'm the only one seeing this issue....:|

No, i DON'T want to download it at home because of the fact i only have dial up. I want to download it at work where i have DSL but DON'T have the game which is why i wanted to know if there is any way to d/l episode 1 as a file that i could then burn and take home to install. But apparently not so end of story.:(

I suppose i can see about bringing my tower to work and installing a dsl modem. But if i can, when is this new version supposed to be available anyway?

most likely there will be a retail version. but prob. the only way to get the updates/files is to dl the game onto that computer.

I just looked into it here at work and i CAN do it. So i'll just bring my PC in when the game is available, which again brings up the question "when"?
