Can someone give me a summary of the Half Life 1 story?

I just finished the campaign. Superb game only the story leaves me dazzled. Can someone explain in short what happened in HL 1 ? I've never played that one so maybe a short explanation of the that story can make me understand HL 2 better.

Oh really? Then why are you still fighting them in HL2?

Ok, Gordon Freeman is a Physicist. He worked at Black Mesa research facililty which was a top secret physics lab. Gordon took direct part in an experiment which accidentally opened a portal to another universe allowing an alien race (the Xen) and their slaves (the Voritgaunts among others) to invade the earth. The accidental opening of the portal AND the invasion almost destroyed the research facility. Gordon tries to make it back to the surface (the facility was underground or in a mountain or both) but the going is difficult because he constantly being hounded by headcrabs, headcrab zombies, hound eyes, bull squids and other alieans (usually in the form of Vortigaunts). The Gov't tries to clean up the mess by sending US Soldiers o clean it up and leave nothing behind (tie up loose ends if you will). The Black Ops also tried to clean up the mess the US Soldiers were trying to clean up while cleaning up the US Soldiers. Gordon battles both of those as well.
Gordon eventually meets up with other scientists who have survived the invasion. They send Gordon to the Aliens home world to take out the head alien (the Nihilanth).
The G-man hires Gordon for his services (willingly?) The Vortigaunts are freed. The rest is in HL2.
