cannot play offline

I finally got EP1 installed after 3 hours of updating via a dial-up connection. Did as has been said....played a bit then saved. But when i try and play offline it won't allow me. If i click "start in offline mode" it tells me the game is not ready top be played in offline mode. I cannot play it while online because i have dial-up and can't have my phone busy for hours at a time. Anyone know how i can make this work? Also, HL2 no longer works till it gets updated too, but when i do that i'm sure i'll run into the same problem. I have $70 woth of valve game now and i can't even play them. help please !

Exit Steam, then go online. Sign out/unconnedt to internet, an it'll remain in Online Mode.

I'm not quite understanding what you mean, but i want it to work in offline mode. And when i click the start in offline mode button it tells me it's not ready to be played offline even tho i did all the updating and played it and saved.
