I made my first map following the video tutorial. When I go to compile the map it gets into counter strike, but then it just sits there. When I try to create a new game using my map it goes back to the main screen. If I try to load one of the prebuilt ones it loads fine.

type in
developer 1
in the console before trying to load your map. That may give you and us some helpful info.

I went to the help file and followed their instructions. Before you compile it says to type "-dev -console +sv_lan 1". I did and here is what it says:

Game.dll loaded for "Half-Life 2 Deathmatch"

You're doing something wrong there. Have you set up hammer properly so it copies the .bsp file to the proper folder? Is the map compiling properly?
Either way your map is not where it should be by default.

Woo, good eye. I missed the error completely.

How 'bout that compile log?

I figured it out. My maps all had spaces and it looks like it won't load them, but it will load maps without spaces. I changed the spaces to underscores and it works. Thanks for the help.

I love when people don't need stuff spelled out for them.
