Can't Load .FGD Files

I cannot load any of the base.fgd or half-life2.fgd files in my hammer editor, hammer editor just freezes up when I attempt to add them.. Any help will be great, thanks..

You're probably using the Goldsource Hammer, for HL1 mapping. Load the Source SDK from Steam's Games/Tools/Whatever Dumb, Misleading Name They're Using For It Now menu.

well, I would use the SourceSDK to run hammer, but for some reason Hammer doesn't load from the list.. I have tried re-isntalling Source SDK twice from the list and it still wont load up hammer from it.. any ideas?
