I live in a college residence so my internet is messed up. I can't play HL2 when steam is not online. How do I change that?

Is HL2 fully updated? Steam and HL2 must be up to date before you can use them in offline mode. If you can't update on your college net, then take your PC somewhere else update, then set it to offline mode

Hmm, the HL2.net offline mode seems to be working for you, i wonder why steam wouldn't. i joke i joke

If I use my laptop on my uni network I can use my web browsers but Steam, AVG and other programmes cannot.

The firewall in my college residence does let me play games. Web browsing is fine though.

F**K steam. Why do I have to go online just to play single player?

You shouldn't, if you've updated recently.

I think you have to be online in order to set it to Offline Mode, which always gets me.

Get one of those wi-fi cards, and jog over to your local wi-fi hotspot.

1. Be online with Steam
2. Launch HL2
3. Exit HL2
4. In Steam, file->go offline
5. Stay offline and play HL2 as much as you want.

If you can't complete step 1 that's not Steams problem since HL2 clearly indicates that it needs an internet connection which isn't an uncommon demand nowadays.
Maybe there is a proxy you can use to bypass you colleges firewall?

1. Launch Steam without internet, and click 'Offline Mode' instead of 'Retry Connection.
2. Profit.

I meant my college residence won't let me play game online.

How can I use a proxy?

Sorry dude that's beyond my area of expertise, I just heard they could help.

Do you know if your college actively wants to block Steam? If not maybe you could talk to your network administrator about getting access to Steam.
