and I want to play.....

Hi, my name's mike, and i've just installed the game, and i believe i registered it (at a web page wher i entered my personal details etc, but no serisl number) and it seems to have installed, but when i try and launch the game a greyish colur box comes up and it tries to lead me through a steam reg process. i fill in the first set of details and click next, but it says 'failed, can't complete in off-line mode' or something similar.
i am online (direct cable connection to another comp that has adsl b'band, everything ok there), and have no options in the registration procedure or anywher else that says 'go online'.
everything thing i do (launching the game) leads me to this reg procedure that i can't complete.

i know i'm dumb, but can someone please tell me what to do.

thanks

Well either 1. You haven't downloaded content or whatever or 2. You have a firewall or something else that blocks Steam from connecting. It doesn't matter if you yourself is connected, it only matters if Steam is connected or not.

There is no web page. Being naughty?

NO. + what's it to you?

Everything was going smoothly, + i was in a hurry, so didn't take much notice, but there deffinitely was a form where i enetered a load of my personal details.

Anyway, i'm gonna check the firewall. Thanks.

thanks. the strange thing is, so far i haven't had to enter the serial number on the box. Maybe that's later...i'm gonna try in a minute (it's onstalled on the other comp to this one)

Hi again,
I think it may be to do with my network/internet setup....I have my main comp with a USB ADSL modem. and the comp that has HL2 on it is networked to it - originally by direct cable connection (xover type setup) and now from today by a router.
File sharing between the 2 comps is fine, so is web browsing/email etc.
The thing that confuses some progs on the comp with HL2 (eg anti-virus/spyware updates etc especially) is that they have to be manually told sometimes to connect to their remote servers via 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.3 being the comp with HL2, and 192.168.0.1 is the router for connecting the 2 comps).

I reckon the steam thing doesn't like this, and thinks it's offline. Is this correst? and is there a way round it apart from connecting the ADSL modem to the comp with HL2 and going from their (I don't want to spend hrs repairing my network afterwards!)

When do you enter the serial number when installing the game...like i said before, i haven't had to yet, maybe something went wrong with the install.....yes, it IS a legal copy.I'd only just got back from PCWorld when I first posted.

Thanks for the help..i know this is all newbie stuff, but i do try + get it to work by myself before posting, but it just ain't happening. Cheers.

It sounds to me like you didn't finish the install but got stuck on the Vivendi Universal registration?
It also sounds to me like you have a D-link router, is this correct?

ah, yes, it was the vivendi universal reg that i got to.
no it's a netgear router. i'm going to try uninstalling, and re-installing.
get back later. cheers.

hi everyone, i feel a little stupid, but it seems to be working now...at least, so far.

Ben, i didn't see your post 'till just now, and although I'm not AOL, the problem was identical.

Anyway, FYI, I uninstall HL2, then uninstall steam. Restart comp. Install from disc (it did steam 1st, then HL), ignored the viv univeversal reg, then it wanted my serial, and is now updateing the game or something.
Thanks everyone who replied to a total noob, but i am very grateful (espicially as i didn't have to spend any money on the prob)

Hopefully it will procede smoothly now.

Meh, he has 8 warnings, what'cha gonna' do?

well, i dunno what all the discussion is about now, but re: the steam thing....
without wanting to add too much to a probably well discussed topic....i'm an 'ordinary' user....splashed out £25 on a game for me & my 11yr old son. Bought it Friday, managed to get it running Sun pm. When i launch it now, i have to go downstairs, make sure the main comp is also on + connected to the 'net, go back upstairs, open cd tray & close it again (disc is already in, but wont lauch from desktop) , several times it says something about off-line mode, after a few goes at it, the game starts to launch....maybe takes another minute to start playing.

Well, not exactly something that you can quickly play for 1/2hr of fun when you've just got home from work!

ok...the piracy thing....i got 2 kids 11trs & 8yrs. I don't really want them having the original game dics (at £25 a throw), so i usually run a no-cd crack. OK, some people may then install on several comps etc etc. Not me...i only use for the above reason, + cos i'm lazy. If HL2 was like this, this could (& would) happen.
Now, i also have TOCA2. AFAIK, up 'till I stopped looking about a month ago, nobody has realistically ever cracked this game. There is a real complicated procedure, but really not worth it...may as well buy another copy. This game takes about 20 secs to start up & play. Massive fun as well BTW.

C'mon Valve, or Vivendi, or the accountants you are probably ruled by, we are buying a £25 GAME for God's sake...with HL3 will we have to pay to have to have webcams installed + photo/fingerprint/iris recognition before we put in our disc that is GPS enabled with it's exact location tracked in real-time?

i gotta take my pill now

oh.
i'll try it next time with no cd.
still, it's certainly not click + play on my m/c just yet. maybe an hr or 2 of investigation + setting it up better will improve it. i'm totally new to this steam thing. i'm just gonna google it + find out what it's doing, how, and why. ta.

Just ask here.

We know allllllllll.
