Characters speaking question

I can only hear characters speak to me when i'm looking directly at them. This may be a dumb question but is that the way it's supposed to be? It's really annoying having to look at one person than the other to get the whole conversation.

Check your speakers setting to see if they're right. If they are, try reinstalling the game or something.

Under audio options when i go to a 2 speaker system setup it fixes the problem. but it doesn't sound as good as when i have the 5.1 setup because i have a 5.1 speaker system. under that setting to hear the characters speak u have to be looking at them. i'm guessing since the voice will only come out center channel the character must be in view. sound about right?
