notice how the citadel in c17 goes straight way down underground? well whats the beef with that? I doubt when the combine were teleporting in citadels, there was a huge ditch in the middle of the city and they decided to dump their citadel there.. my theory is that when the citadels are teleported in they are so heavy (plus maybe they have drills) they go straight through the ground straight away, and keep going til they reach the earths core. then they take geothermal energy out of the heat. a sound theory? discuss.

Then what's the point of dark energy? I think the Citadels made the crater when they landed, or are continually drilling for resources.

I don't think it goes that far. I mean, it has been 20 years since the arrival of the Citadels and they clearly haven't burrowed very far. Sure, the Citadels teleport in but I'm thinking a huge chunk of land was simply swept away as it did so. The Core itself is at the bottom of the structure.

However, given that they are picking the Earth dry of the resources, the absorption of geothermal energy may eventually be a stage that is played out towards the end of the transition.

I think they teleported the Citadel above the ground, so the impact from it falling and hitting the surface would cause huge impact, so a ring of soil around it crumbles completely and falls together with the Citadel. The Citadel's bottom then pierces through soft rock at the bottom of the chasm.

I'm pretty sure they couldn't accurately teleport onto solid ground, and nor would they teleport it just above ground - because that is just plain silly. When it appeared it'd have most likely had a section of it underground, and due to the enormous pressure of such energy the ground would have simply buckled and exploded.

I'm rather sure that would destroy the citadel.

I always figured that their dark energy reacters can convert any matter into energy and they're simply drilling to maintain power.

Don't forget, if you play Our benefactors from the start, the citdael has many "thumpers" pounding the ground plus when you look down below the citdael you can see cars and dirt.

I vote thumpers keep antlions out, and cars and dirt and stuff are from the initial landing.

Although, of course, I could very well be wrong. We'll see... about that.

thumpers would be outside the city. why would they have thumpers to keep antlions out in the innermost. most well protected part of the city?

I always thought they were drilling for resources. At the chasm, you can see these enourmous metal things banging at the ground slowly like a jackhammer, and you can see that the bottom is much farther down than it let on. Whenever you're in the citadel, there's always massive space beneath you.

The only thumpers we see are on Highway 17 IIRC. Highway 17 is past Ravenholm, which is a tiny bit above Black Mesa East, which is far outside C17. It looks like the Citadel is the only thing keeping the antlions out, which makes sense. If somebody manages to wreck the Citadel, the Combine have a much bigger problem than a few antlions.

I didn't mean the traditional thumpers, I was just poin out how you can see the bottom of the citdael, OUTSIDE the core

Well, if the thread starter is correct that's because the citadel is very... very... slow.

Because if the Antlions are capable of burrowing deep enough, they'd be able to tunnel under City 17 possibly finding their way to the citadel. Potentially, the Citadel may act as one giant thumper, keeping the antlions at bay. Hence when it fails in Episode One, the Antlions get into the city (helped of course by the failure of perimeter defences.)

I thought it was obvious when I played the game. Still, great observation, just another example of valve trying to be as reality driven as possible, while still making great scifi-

rock on!

I haven't played Episode 1 but it sounds like a good theory. Although, why would the citadel be designed to keep out antlions when there are loads of them across the galaxy on planets they conquer (I think :S). Would all these planets have an antlion infestation too?

I highly doubt the Citadel was designed to repel antlions. It is simply convenient they have pistons on the outside.

whatwhatWHAT? the antlions are from xen. we dont know if they're on any other planets. I think you're getting mixed up with starship troopers.
maybe I'm wrong, but uh...... I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Okay, when I meant 'thumpers' I was referring to the large sliding metal columns that continually pound dust out from under the citdael. From what I have read, these are a 'tunneling device' used to:

A) pound raw minerals and resources otu of the ground...

or

B) Tunnel and 'root' the citdael firmly into the ground...

The second explaination is the one I prefer for it makes more sense through a practicle means. You can't(in theory) simply POUND minerals ore and other resources out of the ground.

Nothing is native to Xen.

I know I know, but I mean they came to earth FROM xen from whatever backwater planet they came from.

They can't come from Xen
Remember the goal of Sandtraps
STAY ON THE ROCKS
they can't be from XEN, because Xen is a bunch of rocks covered in 'snetient fungi' and 'inhabited by meteorlogical intelligences, worlds stretched thin across the membrane where dimensions... intersect" sorry, I love that speech

During the final sequence where Gman gave his speech to Gordon there was a part with sand, dead soldiers a tank and a plane. Can whole sections of the Earth simply teleport to another location? Cause that would seem to explain that part.

We where on Xen for less than half an hour, we saw next to nothing of it. If you had only seen Antarcitca would you believe snakes could survive on Earth? And that speach as far as we know has nothing to do with Xen.

i missed that.where?
