If HL2 is based in eastern europe, how come everyone sounds american? Shouldn't the citizens on City 17 have accents? There is that one guy who gives you the rocket launcher but thats basically it.

Maybe all the original inhabitants were wiped out. With the exception of Father Gregori, he has a very East European accent.

yeah... I think so... maybe alot of eartern europeans were moved to other cities and were replaced by american.

Or maybe Valve just didn't think to hire enough voice actors who could do Eastern European accents. Father Grigori was the ONLY person in the whole game with one.

The storyline reason is because people keep getting transferred between the cities, so nobody's really native to a town anymore. And it's also because, as far as I can hear, there are only two civilian voices - male and female - both played by American voice actors. I doubt Valve would want to get a voice for every cultural denomination.

What's with all these people trying to prove City 17's in America? I love City 17 as an Eastern European town. I don't want everything to be...for lack of a better word 'Americanised'. It takes the flavour out of the world.

To sum up: City 17 is in Eastern Europe. Not in the 'States.

Yea when I played I had no idea of the storyline and I somehow assumed it was near New Mexico near the Black Mesa compound considering when I saw Eli there and how short of a time it took to get there besides the fact they all pretty much spoke english. It could explain the memory sounds to as described in the previous post, he probably knew these places already though it seems unlikely.

I bet they all woulda spoke english if it wasn't only for Father Gregori, hes great, a Clergyman with a 12-guage blowing away his congregation.
