Colorful shadows

Hi there...
i am experiencing some very disturbing shadow colors.
They should be some kind of grey to black, but in fact they are red as blood.

Specs:
AMD64 3500+
ATI X1600XT (Catalyst 6.1)
2GB RAM
Fakefactory Cinematic Mod

any ideas?

(The screenshot turned out to be pitch black. I had to pull up brightness a lot, so the image looks very very bad, but u can see the strange red shadows.)

it´s not a problem of the cinematic mod... i get those shadows even with the mod uninstalled...

more ideas?
someone with an ATI X1600XT around for camparison?

validated, updated, reinstalled.. nothing works...

only the "painted" (overlays?) wall-shadows show that color..
and they are kind of "blocky".. like they were painted with BIG pixels...

object-shadows are good.. dark grey and a fine outline...

(Again the screenshot turned out to be pitch black. I had to pull up brightness a lot for u to see s.t.)

Did you OC your X1600XT or any other device for that matter?
Because that graphic is pretty messed up and it could be rather hardware not software.
All of your drivers are up to date?
Also for areas being pitch black that's normal for HL2, since there are some areas you can't see your way around without the flash light. Is this what you're talking about, or the whole screen goes pitch black?

no OC at all.. neither RAM and CPU nor grafic..
all drivers are the latest...

and it´s just the screenshot that is black.. during gameplay i can see quite clear, even in this dark areas... and i dont have to pull up in game brightness to max for the "barely visible" to be what it is supposed to be: barely visible.. 1.7 is enough

i just found out another wierd thing... shouldn´t weapons flash, when fired? why is there no lighting on the walls? in other words: where is my volumetric lighting for weapons gone to? i tried to catch it by screenshot, but HL2 crashed at pressing the screenshot button without further commentary... plain crash, no errors shown... strange....

there is one thing coming to my mind while typing here: don´t HL2 like hardware to be changed after install? the only thing i did not try by now is a complete reinstall of the game after changing some not worth to mention hardware: mainboard, CPU (AMD32 to AMD64), graficcard, RAM

Windows works fine after repair-install :)

but how can i keep my savegames? is it enough to save the folder and put it back after reinstall?

edit: i just found out, that in fact, i do have dynlights... but only on objects, that can be moved.. no lighting on the walls.. "r_dynamic" set or not equals to no change in behavior

Yeah, HL2 doesn't have dynamic shadows (that move with the location of the light source) :p
It's possible to have it, though. Normally you should light up the walls when you fire near them, so that's also an odd problem.
Oh, and if you've got a 64-bit CPU, you may indeed get some odd effects. Are you sure HL2 is completely up to date?
Left-click on Steam tray icon
Select "Games"
Click on the "My Games" tab
Right-click on "Half-Life 2"
Select "Properties"
Click on the "Updates" tab

Is it set to automatically update?

automatic updates are ON

i compared all valve games on my system:
HL2 = no weapon lighting on walls, strange red shadows
HL2:Cinematic Mod = no weapon lighting on walls, strange red shadows
HL2:LC = no weapon lighting on walls, no sign of strange red shadows
CS = clearly visible and very bright weapon lighting on walls, great shadows

strange...

Odd =|
I'll give you some general troubleshooting tips ;)
Hmm seems Steam Support is down right now :|

EDIT: kk Steam Support is back online
Link 1
Link 2

thanx...
but nothing found/helped there...
also the "ask a question" tab is not present... *sigh*

for completing my errors here´s another screenshot... now the loading menu :)
by now i did not found it worth to mention...
(yesterday the 2nd pic was OK....)

any idea how to lure a Valve Pro to this thread?

core facts repeated for the lazy reader
current Sytem:
AMD64 3500+
MB: nVidia4 Ultra
ATI X1600XT
SB Audigy
HL2:S + Fakefactory Cinematic Mod (thrd party install)

Installed the game while using AMD32 3000+; ATI 9800SE and VIA chipset board, updated hardware and reinstalled WinXP (repair), SP1, DX9.0c and all drivers are up to date.

known errors by now:
- shadows in dark regions appear to be red as blood and "blocky"
- weapon flashes (when fired) appear only on movable objects
- game crashes to desktop when trying to take a screenshot of "no flashing"
- loadgame menu shows distorted pictures

and a whole new question:
please take a look at these videos and tell me: are your maps the same? I´ve never seen this glowing tentacles (Half-Life 2 Tunnels Video) and my coastline looks very different also....

Oh, those videos are from the old build. Valve had the impression their new maps had a more HL2 feeling to it. Don't mind it :)

Also, have you checked for IRQ conflicts?

yes i have... none...

hey.. btw. where do you know IRQ conflicts from?
they are old school and don´t happen anymore on modern mainboards...
(ok... they should not happen anymore *gg*)
according to your profile you are just 16 and should have never encountered that kind of problem ;)

Star, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Hardware Resources, IRQs.
While you at it, also check Conflict/sharing, DMA, I/O, Memory. Just to see if there are extra hardware problems. make sure they all have OK next to them.
Before it used to be the BOIS that reserved IRQs but now the OS can do better jobs assigning IRQs better and makes it possible to share IRQs, since every device has its own memory and dll address one IRQ number can have two or there different devices sharing it. But each device has its own unique memory and dll (Direct Link Library) address....But mind you that BIOS is still in charge and responsible of assigning IRQs that cant be shared like keyboard mouse etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong there.
Good Luck.

I'm old school indeed, mate :p
I've worked with DOS, Windows 3.11, floppy (the 720KB ones) discs, I've played Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Xenobots and Dune 2 all on an old Compaq machine.

Anyway, I've heard the Creative SB Audigy (2) cards sometimes create IRQ conflicts.

*sigh from the heart* good old times, when we used a perforator to write our programs :)

back to topic:
no conflicts at all.. Audigy has a not shared interupt for its own

Yeah and your DOS 1,2,3 floppies would be contaminated with viruses and pass it on to each other after each intercourse with driver.

no more ideas anyone? :|
no X1600XT users out there to compare with? :dozey:
c´mon... p l e a s e :stare:

Try posting your question again at the Steam forums, because I'm fresh out of ideas, and the Steam forums have a much wider audience that might have a similar system ;)

ive had this problem too on one occasion....it also happens a lot on my tv. i got an x850 xt pe and this happened once....when i opened quicksaves the pics looked like yours actually. exactly like that. shadows looked blood red and screenshots i tried to take were entirely black. on my tv the shadows are kind of green in certain areas to this day. try reinstalling your gfx card drivers....or you can restart your comp and see what that does....but im pretty sure you already tried that (thats what i did to fix mine though).

i have installed the new (6.2) ati driver... no change... *sigh* *clueless*

but i contacted ATI.. maybe they know how to fix it... i keep u informed :)

ATIs response:
I looked at the forum thread and I really don't know what is causing this. I've never actually seen it before. It may have something to do with your driver settings in the Catalyst Control Center.

In the CCC, make the AA and AF settings to application controlled and the Catalyst AI enabled and on advanced. If that doesn't help, try all different levels of Catalyst AI and see how it does. You should also try different ingame graphics options to see what will work best for your system.

This is definately not a known issue to ATI.
