What I think is most interesting was the real quick line by the Vortigaunt (during the scene when you watch the Combine cross the bridge heading north) that the Combine Advisors had yet to hatch. Which seems to mean that those large grub forms are simply a larval stage. Wonder what they look like all grown up?

Yeah I was wondering about that. It's something that had never been mentioned before though - the reason for them being so grub-like was that they were a race that had become too dependent on their own technology and had evolved accordingly, becoming physically feeble yet highly intelligent and powerful in other ways (psychokinetic powers, mindrape, etc.)
Perhaps that has changed.

It hasn't changed. Their race are still slugs, but they're in a sort-of incubation period.

So...they become BIGGER slugs?

They are fully formed in the Episode 2 finale. It's interesting that they need to hatch, though; I suppose it has something to do with the idea of them being in incubation inside the pods they were in.
