What's the difference between the Kleiner/Eli teleports and the Combine teleports? I haven't been able to pick the difference out during the game. Can somebody please explain it to me, because right now, it all looks like the same thing to me. :( Thanks.

I think combines can travel to another dimension/world. But Kleiner/Eli can travel only on short distances. probably only in Earth...

Combines can't teleport locally, they can only teleport cross dimensionally eg from their homeworld to Earth. But they can't teleport from point to point on the earth.
However Kleiner and co can teleport around to another teleport, eg between Kliener's lab and Eli's Lab. I think they need a destination teleporter though, otherwise they end up in random locations, like in the sea with the Icthyosaur, or on the beach. Not sure about their ability to goto other dimensions though, I think huge energy is needed (ie Dark Energy source). I think they say they slingshot around Xen to do their local teleporting. Can't remember where I heard that though.

Eli and kliener slingshot around xen, without having to pass through. Kirovmans description mostly correct.

Combine portals however, are string based.

That's right, the Combine teleport is interdimensional, and once you arrive you're dependant on local transport. Eli/Kleiner's and the shiny, brand-new one at Nova Prospekt that Mossman helped build, are able to teleport to different locations on earth.

That doctor woman who betrays you later in the game tells you about Combine teleportation when she's leading you down to Eli. Listen carefully to what she says, something about how their previous teleportation equations didn't factor in the dark energy equations. Then she speaks of why the Combine want their technology, (reasons the posts above me explain) which is exactly why they kidnap Eli. Although it's hard to miss that whole point in the course of the game. Otherwise they would just kill Eli, not capture him.

Yes and then when Dr Mossman is working for the combine, she steals or develops the technology to allow the combine to teleport locally, at Nova Prospekt. However you destroy this teleport as you teleport out at the end of Entanglement, arriving 1 week later, sabotaging the Combine's hopes of local teleporters.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I know why the Combine wanted Eli now.

Now what about the Xonian teleportations? For example, Vortigaunts, Alien Grunts, Bullsquids and so on teleporting to Black Mesa. Are those portals like Kleiner's/Eli's ones (with the crystals) or are they being controlled by the Nihilanth?

the Nihilanth is generally accepted as the source of those teleportations, combined with some random teleportations due to the cascade
but as said above, the Combine are capable of dimension-to-dimension teleportation, and that is basically what they are doing in HL1

the Nihilanth didnt control the teleportations, they were random. They are random distortions between the 2 worlds. The combine used those to make a permenant passsage between the 2 worlds.

I am pretty sure he did control them at the time of the black mesa incident. I am also pretty sure the scientist at the pinnalce of the Lambda reactor says this

At first, the Xenian teleportations are random, but then the resonance cascade is stopped and the Nihilanth starts deploying his troops.

In Decay, you manage to stop the cascade, but Rosenberg says that something is keeping the dimensional rift open from the otherside. So we know Nihilanth must have taken advantage of the cascade at the very least.

She says that the combine dont have enough dark energy equations, thats why theres such a high rise time...especially with the citadel portal.
