Could not connect to the Steam network

When I purchased HL2 I was using Earthlink, but when they wanted to start charging me $20 a month I cancelled my subscription. Now when I try to connect to Steam it starts updating itself and when it finishes it says "could not connect to the Steam network please check your internet connection and try again"
