Couldn't play HL2 last night

Last week I bought the orange box and started playing Half Life 2. The game is a lot of fun and I was enjoying it a lot until last night. At 2:00 AM I tried to play HL2 but it wouldn't load. The steam box said "preparing to load Half Life 2" but just stayed there. I think it was because my ISP was down and it couldn't connect to the Internet.

This sucks big time, I bought the game and installed it on my hard drive but still can't play without the Internet. Is there any way to play when my ISP is down? They are doing upgrades and are frequently down between 2 to 4 AM when I want to play.

When you are connected, and planning to be disconnected, go into offline mode through the 'File' tab at the top of Steam. HL2 must be fully updated to work.

Do you have to be logged in to into offline mode?
