CounterStrike/HL2Deathmatch not working

Hi

Every time i try to load either counterstike or deathmatch neither work...both
are 100% up to date.

I get to the appropriate screen and click join server and everything just freezes
so i have to turn my comp off at the plug :dozey:

How can i play these games ?

Problem : Still cant get Counterstike to play..

768MB vitrual memeory (i think)
DX 9.0c
Geforce 6600GT (agp)
128MB
1024X764

Not sure about the drivers...

Other info...

1meg broadband
160GB hard drive
