What's happening is I am running CS and HL2 for the first time on a laptop. It's not the most graphically capable, but it does have a higher clock than my desktop.

lapspecs.jpg

My desktop has a 1.13Ghz PIII and runs CS at a brisk 9-50 fps depending on how many guns are being fired around me. :D
Problem is the damn cpu is maxed out all the time, and my chair is really uncomfortable. The PIII/MB is the oldest component on my system.
Hooray for SDRAM! Not.

I fully intend to get a better chair and am looking at a P4 3.0 and mainboard with a 800Mhz fsb minimum.

However, until then I'd like to get the laptop running at at least 20fps (not great, but playable).

Here's the problem: Three of CS's video settings are not as low as possible.
Model detail, texture detail, and shader detail. They are on medium, medium, and high respectively.
Recommended settings my ass.
I tried to change them, but that point is moot, because I found that even without changing the settings, HL2 will crash if I go into advanced settings, click out, then hit either OK or Apply in the options menu.

I know it's possible to change most of these settings in a cfg file, but the one I looked at didn't seem to have video settings.

Now a fix for the crash would be great, but all I really need is to change the settings.
If there is no known fix meaning I just need more memory or something (which is entirely possible), or if there is no manual cfg settings, I guess I am just s.o.o.l.

Replies are appreciated
(:

Oh, one more thing.
On my desktop I have a problem with Windows Security Center popping up randomly and minimizing CS, usually resulting in a 30 second afk and my death. ): If I'm really lucky I will get kicked for my ping spiking to 800 or something. )':

How do I kill it in the face?

HL2 and its mods tend to just crash and drop out if your card isn't strong enough.

And have you updated your drivers?

If you really can't find a fix, I'll just get the commands for you :p

Driver's for what? It's not like I have a supported video card. :/

Command me up?

Right, give me a few minutes :p

EDIT: Cheap command copying ftw \0/

Good god.

I don't have a "mat_bloom"
I have mat_bloomscale and mat_bloomamount_rate.

Lol :D

Left-click on the Steam tray icon
Select 'Games'
Select the 'My Games' tab
Right-click on 'Half-Life 2'
Select 'Properties'
Select the 'Updates' tab

Is the option set to "Always keep this game up to date" ?
If not, set it and restart Steam.

Wtfx?

K it was set to not update automagically.

I changed it.

Still not sure how to change the gfx.

I'm not either :|

Maybe you should Google some graphical commands.

That's how I found this forum. :/
Lol :p

I'll see if I can find some ;)

I found some stuff that might help improve performance:

r_maxdlights (It was on 32 for me)
r_shadows (1 or 0)
r_propsmaxdist - Maximum visible distance (It was on 1200 for me)

Didn't find anything else :|

Some more I found last time:

"mat_filtertextures" = "1" (Something to do with AA??? Try setting it to 0)
"mat_mipmaptextures" = "1" (Set this to 0, forgot what it does it's got something to do with shaders)
"mat_compressedtextures" = "1" (I dunno :p, maybe 0 will make it uncompressed???)
"mat_texture_limit" = "-1"
- If this value is not -1, the material system will limit the amount of texture memory it uses in a frame. Useful for identifying performance cliffs. The value is in kilobytes. (Maybe limit it?)
"mat_trilinear" = "1" ( def. "0" ) (This is filtering, put it to 0 and I think it will change to bilinear filtering)
"mat_forceaniso" = "1" (Forgot what this was, I think it's got something to do with AA)
"mat_filterlightmaps" = "1" (Filtering probably, try setting it to 0)
"mat_bumpmap" = "1" (Wait, this is the one that has to do with shaders :| Whatever just put this one on 0 too :p)
"mat_picmip" = "1" (Something to do with AA or shaders. Probably. :p Try setting to 0)

mat_compressedtextures is better on 1, and something made my texture detail set to high.
---
Setting picmip to 0 set tex on high. Setting it to one puts tex on medium.

And the other stuff?

Oh, you can type in net_stats 3 for a lot of info and cl_showfps 1 for your FPS ;)

Other stuff made the graphics really crappy even though the menu settings haven't changed.
According to cl_showfps I'm hitting around 1-5fps xDDDD

The huge blocks are hot.
