i installed hl2 using a shared dvd drive from the other computer in my house, it worked fine.
i than tried to insert the cd, but it needed the actual dvd drive in that computer [sigh] so i made an image off the other computer, put it on this one and i could insert the cd key [yay].
than when i go to play it, it comes up with a securom error about emulation, so i'm assuming daemon tool's securom doesn't work etc.
i've tried 3 dvd drives, one was suspected not to work, and didn't. the other works in the computer it was in, not this one though.
The final one i tried [scsi dvd] was the one i used as a shared drive. When I have the SCSI controller adapter [pci] plugged, in my computer won't pass the SATA Controller POST page, it just sits there.
All of this so valve can limit warez [fair enough], so they can make more money, but @ the expense of the user.
I miss the old days [well, everyone/thing except for valve] where i could just throw in the cd, install it and put in a cd key.
now i have to go out, buy a new dvd drive for this computer.
nb: i've been 'supporting' valve and their steam adventure since the beginning [when you had to use a batch file to create an account] and i've sat there through every single problem [which occurs with everything they do]. i'm just sick of it now.
