Add the vmt and vtf files to a folder within HL2/materials such as "Half-Life 2/Materials/Graveyard" and they should show up in hammer.

Thanks for quick reply, i actualy had them all laying in the materials folder, so now i followed ur instructions and they do show ingame but as purple checkerd pattern, so i guess theres an error reading them.

Any suggestions?

You need the info in the .vmt to point to the correct path of the .vtf.

Open up the vmt in in notepad and find the path listed, point that to where it is actually found (in the above example "Half-Life 2/Materials/Graveyard"). If you are slightly confused on the syntax open a different vmt and see how they did it.

Or get a nice tool that does all of that for you. I simply export my textures from a tga file and they end up in the destination folder with corresponding vmt file complete with settigns and all.

it was my fault, these textures came in a folder which i should have kept them in, its all good now thanks again

Yeah, you can put them in the listed folder (which is shown in the method I said) or do as I said and change it to suit you.

@Unarmed - Each to their own I suppose, I prefer to learn through experience rather than hammering different buttons and the such.

Huh?

hammer difernt buttons? Nah... All you do is check boxes instead of typing keyvalues.

It's like using SmartEdit in hammer. It makes things faster and smoother.

Or using hammer at all for that matter since one can do it in notepad should you want to.

What I meant is you never really learn the syntax using your method, just how to use a program.

I can create a basic level in notepad, purely because I know the syntax from looking at it enough and fixing corrupt vmf files.

Yeah, same here... Althgough I dont think the syntax for materials is all that hard :S

So you learn that after like 3 materials and then its back to hitting buttons for me since that is just way faster...

Oh, and now I notice that you are a BM: S level designer. What levels are yours? I absolutley adore that mod, wish I was talented enough to be on the team.

I've finished Forget About Freeman, reworking through We've got hostiles atm the moment, and I'm doing some work on anom materials (the parts just before the test chamber).

I'm also going to be working on the hazard course.

(I should probably update my sig, I'm lead ld now)

Nice.... you're doing well, I can tell you that. Care to send me a beta? :P

Hey guys, i just formatted my computer and i have a problem involving textures so i didnt want to make a new thread.

In my map i have a few custom textures and now there purple checkerd meaning they are missing, so here is my question. How do i make it so people do not have to download these textures they just come with the map?

the way i added these textures was rather cowboy, all i did was go to counter-strike source and import my texture as a logo :P

You can use bspzip iirc. Check the Valve developer wiki for usage.

or PAKRAT (I think thats the name)

and having textures as decals sounds to me like a bad idea.
