A shrewd poster (I think it was the operator of BeyondHalflife) had an e-mail in the thread up top commenting that this attachment revealed that Dr. Kleiner wasn't looking directly at you. An employee from Valve said that it was a visual bug. Yet, looking at a lot of these older screenshots, is this something that needs to be looked at in further detail? For example these guys have the same problem, and it isn't universal, as you can see from this screenshot which is just fine.

The first two are older screen shots from last years e3. I'm sure they fixed the problem by now.

that first screenshot is ghetto old, look at the geometry in the level, its blocky and pretty much looks like shit, especially those tubes that are orange...have you seen the kleiners lab video? if so then you'll easily notice that the actual map of kleiners lab looks much much better than that screenshot.

so i wouldnt doubt that at the time there was an issue with the eyes...

Not to mention Alyx... what the hell is she wearing under her jacket?

Not every character in the game will always be looking directly at you all the time.

Next?

Hold on. I have a question. Most of the screenshots/video's came out around the same time, right? What is this talk about old screenshots?

Gabe said that the reason they weren't looking directly at you is because of the Demo recording. Just like how in traptown the wood breaks before the crowbar hits it. It's a bug that occured when they recorded the demos.

yes they did, but look at the models and the level geometry, its not hard to see that its old and outdated (in the first screenshot with alyx and the guy).

interesting point, Eternity... either way, since it took this long to notice, i doubt we'll be seeing much of a problem when we're running around shooting combine :)

also, look at the alyx E3 vid. she's looking right at you... Bill Van Buren said that's the best way to see the eyes in action.

The bug was created by the fact that the method of recording was basically to point a video camera (although a really good one) at the computer screen and recording. This is best noticed in the 25 minute, 600 meg all in one version.

Ummm... If that were true, Cunni, wouldn't the eyes seem to be looking at you anyway, like in paintings? A computer screen doesn't have a 3D image... yet...

err no, the Bink vids were recorded ingame by the source demo options, valve said this when asked if we would be able to export vids (which we can I think). Thats how they get the mistimings, it wouldnt happen if u just pointed a video camera at a monitor.

Anyway, perhaps this is the party map where Gordon goes around with a big "LOOK AT THIS!!!" sign on top of his head, you can see the look of contempt in all the faces at such an old joke.

I showed my friend the E3 video of HL2. Needless to say he was amazed at everything about HL2, but he did bring up a good point. He didn't care about the speech of the NPC's, but he cared about how the eyes of the G-Man and others moved. It is kind of wierd to say that the eyes give more life to a NPC than the highly touted speech function that Valve is doing.

Apos, when they're standing in an otherwise empty room and looking exactly over your shoulder just like the other screenshot was, yes, I think they were supposed to be looking at you.

*points at head knowingly*
