Deathmatch Server Connections in Java

I'm trying to write a basic AI plugin for Deathmatch using some legacy java code. (don't worry, it's not for actual playing - just for fun) Does anybody know if it's possible to interact with a Deathmatch server from an outside application? I'm running the server on my own computer and it can connect easily, it just won't talk to me.
