destroying the autoturret

I noticed that there is a crate of grenades next to the autoturret, but i cant seem to destroy it with them. My guess is that you have to somehow use the grav. gun?

Once you're in the building with the turret, there's a panel to the left of it. Can't remember if you have to open it first, but you drop a grenade in there & it destroys the turrets controls.
