Differences every time through the game

I was reading the post about how Father Gregory sometimes dies and sometimes lives. I played through Ravenholm for my third time last night, plus watching my brother play through it, and this time he died in the flames while surrounded by zombies, the two previous time he would just run around and keep shooting.. I even hung out a while just to see if anything else would happen and it didn't.

Also during this time through, those zombies that shoot the poison black headcrabs were making a different noise than last time. Last time he was making this wierd/scary breathing/laughing noise, it was CREEPY. Creepy enough that I paused the game, and with the sound looping, called my brother and left him a 2 minute message of it on his voicemail.

This time through they were definately making a different noise, not one made the same noise that ALL of them were making last time around. It was still creepy, but just different.

So I am just wondering if Valve put a lot of different effects in the game, kinda to make it slightly different each time. Thats the only reason that could explain this..

Oh yeah one other example is this time through, Dog started picking up different stuff than before. He was tossing some short silver barrels and other random items that are lying around the area that I've never seen him throw before.
 
I don't know about Father Grigori, I've only ever watched to see if he died once. But something is really weirding me out.. I've gone through Water Hazard two different ways, one of them which I think is the normal one where you have to open a dam and a barrier, and then another one... where I didn't. Is that normal?
 
I've always had to open a dam and a barrier. Your saying you never had to open them one time through? I don't think there is 2 routes through there.
