My intentions of buying this was down to the fact I had played the original and I enjoyed playing the game. Simple gameplay mechanics, yet in depth micro-management. Despite having a fixed-rotatable isometric graphics engine, it was a fun experience.
Comes along Stronghold 2, and I had to check it out. Even though it had a 3D graphics engine this time round, I wasn't going to buy it for that feature alone. Other gameplay features include more ways to defend your stronghold, new buildings, a new single-player campaign, cope with fires, plague, etc.
Come playing it, I felt I was handed a piece of sh*t.
- Steep (very steep) learning curve, both for the peaceful and military single player games, it is difficult to pass mission 3 for both gameplay types
- Multiplayer (more precisely Skirmish), was too compact, and clustered, and there was no way of having more than two people play at anyone time, otherwise it is difficult to gain any type of land and a foothold is generated very quickly for every player playing
- 3D engine was old and feeble and was not optimized. The animations and movements of the characters and siege weapons felt laggy and had fixed movement (think, a sprite that looked 3D)
-It looked like they had spent more time doing the cutscenes than the actual gameplay mechanics
-Some buildings I thought were not essential (They might of served som,e purpose in the peaceful campaign, but I didn't get to that point
-Earthquake+Meteor Shower+Acid+Microwaves= The type of fire you will be seeing ingame, at one point the amount of water wells I had outnumbered any other building (I literally had one well next to each building)
My Verdict
Stronghold= 8/10
Stronghold 2 = 4/10
