Do you need HL2 to use/play Aftermath?

I was wondering if Aftermath/Episode1 is a standalone game or if you to have purchased and installed HL2 as well?

It's standalone.

And everything you need to play is included in the box – Half-Life 2 is not required to play.

Nope. Says right on the box. Half-life 2 is not required.
